About Your Sabbath

by Tonja Taylor
12/05/2022 / Christian Apologetics

So then, there is still awaiting a full and complete Sabbath-rest reserved for the [true] people of God;--Hebrews 4:9, AMPC

Then they went back and made ready spices and ointments (perfumes). On the Sabbath day they rested in accordance with the commandment.--Luke 23:55, AMPC

When we are true children of God (by having sincerely received the LORD Jesus Christ, His Son, by asking Him to forgive our sins and come into our hearts and be our Savior and LORD), then God is our Father. He is our loving, faithful Daddy God, Who wants only the best for us.

This includes helping us understand how to take care of ourselves, which includes getting enough physical and mental rest.

Most of us children of God find ourselves energized and desirous of doing many things for our darling Savior. We want the whole world to know Him! That is what we should desire, and daily, we get the privilege to love and live His Word, and help others see Him.

We can overdo it, though. Ask me how I know!

However, when the LORD is energizing us; when He has anointed us to do something, we can work long hours and get an amazing amount of His work done--and not be weary!

At least in my experience, when I'm doing His work, I may get tired, and need rest and refreshing, but I don't get weary in my body nor my soul (mind, will, emotions).  He supplies the strength.

He also gives us wisdom when we need to back off, and reduce our workload--no matter what others may think.

I tutor many students online, and even with all those I'm helping, there are long waiting lists in many districts that need tutoring.

When I was awarded so many students to help that I started teaching 7 days a week (even though it was not all day long every day), the LORD gently reminded me to carve out time for a Sabbath rest.

I attend church on Sunday morning, of course. That time is sacred; it is a Sabbath rest to me, to be with my Church body and invest that time to worship and praise and learn more of His holy, unchanging, life-saving Word! I refuse to tutor during those hours, although of course there are students who'd love me to help them at that time (May they desire to go to church and seek Him, even if it's on a different day!). Then I have a leisurely lunch with my husband and take a nap. (Jesus took naps, so as I tell my husband, that's another way of being Christ-like!)

However, the LORD recently nudged me that I need to add to that Sabbath. So, while my brain can reason, that often can go against the wisdom of God. So I asked Him to show me His plan. He revealed to me to take Wednesday nights and Thursday mornings as my Sabbath, to add to the time I already take with Him and my husband on Sundays.

This delights me, because now I will be able to attend church on Wednesday nights, then rest on Thursday!  I had been teaching on Wednesday nights, but I just made the God-led decision to stop in time to go to church (I drive 30 minutes, and it's so worth it!), and rest with my God and Church family, in His house!

While tutoring online is very pleasant, rewarding, and easy to me, there is additional time of preparation and reporting, which adds additional hours. I've found, too, when I listen to true praise and worship music and preaching of the Word as I'm reporting and preparing, that my spirit, soul, and even body are refreshed.

God is good. He loves you! If you feel weary and overworked, first repent, and ask Him for His wisdom.

If any of you is deficient in wisdom, let him ask of the giving God [Who gives] to everyone liberally and ungrudgingly, without reproaching or faultfinding, and it will be given him. --James 1:5, AMPC

He knows how to work things out where you can accomplish what you need to, while still taking care of yourself. Others depend on us, and so taking care of ourselves is not selfish, but necessary.

The LORD wants--and commands--us to have a Sabbath weekly; a rest. He will help you make sure you have a Sabbath (or a more effective one), and you'll be so glad you did!
