THEY'LL NEVER THINK TO LOOK FOR US HERE!

by linzy bruno
3/10/2023 / Short Stories

“They wanna burst in and take all the provisions away from anyone who's been smart enough to prepare……They would  just come in and take everything we’ve been stockpiling; except for one thing…….. they will never think to check a run down old house like this one and in a neighborhood like this. And I’ll bet we have more provisions than anyone on this street! That means God is helping us even more than we thought! We’ve been just so grateful to have a roof over our heads….. We’ve been talking about how it’s not so bad living with a few imperfections, okay many…..like the walls not being straight and aligned with the ceilings…..kinda pulling away from the foundation…. the roof needing repair, the floors being in bad shape, the cheap paint in the kitchen is making peeling that should never happen. And there are so many holes in the foundation we can’t keep up with all the mice and other pests that make their way in. Now we have even more of a reason to rejoice living here! There is no way they will think to look here for anything of any value. Of course we would continue to give and share with brothers and sisters if the opportunity presents itself, but I don’t think we have to worry about the authorities looking for nonperishables in a place like this!” Franky Petrillo declared. “PLUS, this house is known in the neighborhood as the one in the worst condition. It only stands to reason that everyone around here doesn’t have a clue as to how well stocked we really are,” he continued.

Cecilia got up from the couch and went into the kitchen to check their food supply, without replying to Frank’s remark about their house.

He got up and followed her as soon as he felt the sway of her displeasure.

“Did I say something wrong? He inquired of his wife of thirty years.

“No not really. I’m sorry Franky. I don’t know what’s bothering me,” she replied.

Frank moved in closer and stared into her big brown eyes. “You don’t have to pretend with me. I feel it too. This is scary…….and even feel sorta lonely…… not being able to see our friends anymore……especially knowing they would probably steal from us the first chance they got. In fact, I should probably put on some extra locks on the front door. Don’t we have a couple of brand new door knobs around here?” He asked, looking around. “Oh I’m sorry there I go again. I don’t mean to say depressing things all the time Cecilia. I’m sorry,” he said, as he turned to walk away.

“No,” she replied; grabbing his shirt and tugging it gently.

Then he grabbed her around her waist and hugged her, as he wondered if her cry could be heard clear around the neighborhood.

“I’m ok,” she suddenly announced; pulling away from his embrace. “We have God on our side now that we finally stopped running away from Him and have given Him our whole lives……I’m actually quite confident that we don’t really have to worry…….I think I just needed to sort of let it all out. I’m still so mad at myself for not believing in God before the Rapture.”

“I get it Sweetheart,” he replied; kissing her on the cheek.

“Just so you know, I started out trying to be comforting……You know talking about how no one would ever think to look here for provisions of any kind! We really should thank God for that.”

At that, they both got down on their knees.

“Thank You LORD that You have called us to Yourself! We are so happy to be saved and grateful LORD…….SO grateful!” Franky prayed, with Cecilia right by his side.

As soon as they both were standing again, Cecilia’s eyes filled back up with tears. “I feel better Franky. Thank you,” she said, as she went back into the living room. And feeling exhausted; she lied down on the couch.

“Hey, I thought you wanted something to eat?” Franky called out a few minutes later, as he headed toward the living room. But Cecilia had fallen asleep. He covered her up with her favorite throw and kissed her cheek, as he too felt tears welling in his eyes…

Then he went back into the kitchen. ‘Wow, three a.m. and I’m still up, but I doubt I can sleep anyway. Lord, please help us,’ he silently prayed, as he tried to choke down a can of dry tuna fish.

Then he went to bed and as he lied there; staring at the ceiling he thought about how amazing God is….’I know I’ve been dying to get my hands on a car Lord, but I am so amazed to realize the blessing in not having one right now, because with no cars in the driveway, it really helps make it seem like there is no one here…..Just like, as much as I miss having electricity, we don’t have to worry that our lights are giving us away or the sound of the TV either……And thank You Lord that You made us wise enough to stock up on nonperishables before we even knew YOU! And thank You that Cecilia and I have such a great marriage because we don’t fuss and fight…..That would also be a dead giveaway,’ he thought; starting to laugh out loud.

Several months passed and the Petrillos were starting to run out of food, but their power did come back on, remarkably.

“Don’t cry Cecilia,” Franky said; trying to comfort her one morning. The only thing that she could have for breakfast was an old granola bar from her purse. “Sure, right when we get our power back we have nothing to cook,” she cried.

“I know cuz we ate raw oatmeal mixed with a bit of water……I know it’s awful and REALLY scary. And with the power back, they have a much better chance of finding us, but at least now we can warm things up again! And God will come through. He always does,” he said reassuringly.

“Yeah I know…….But you do realize don’t you that we could go to the grocery store……It’s only a mile down the street and we do still have a little money, that I know they converted to a digital currency but still…..”

“WHAT? Are you crazy? We would have to get the mark of the beast to pull that off and you know that! You must be stressed to even think such a thing!”

“Yeah! It’s called starvation!” Cecilia replied, with a shout that took extra effort.

“I know Honey…..I’m hungry too, but God is going to provide!”

Just at that moment, they were struck by something overhead. They both looked up and coming from the ceiling was MANNA sent from Heaven! And the Lord continued to feed them for several months. And the Petrillos continued to worship God and to praise Him.

Toward the end of the tribulation period, they made a habit of reading what God did for Israel; how He fed them from the sky (Exodus 16:4-34) and how He has been protecting them at the present time, through Jacob’s Trouble, as is recorded in Psalm 91.

“I know this chapter in Psalms is for the Jews, but I also know that since God has grafted us in and we are also part of His family; His adopted ones, that this Psalm is for anyone who believes and relies on Him.

They continued to see all kinds of suffering, violence and death right outside their door, but evil never came near their dwelling.

“We have the blood of Jesus on our doorposts, which is yet another promise for the Jews that I know also applies to us Gentiles. “The things He promised them when they were in the wilderness carry lessons for us too, even though he was dealing with them specifically regarding their returning to idol worship time and time again……Lessons like we must stay devoted to our LORD!”

“And God has continued to feed us and take care of us all throughout the tribulation. It can’t be much longer. We are at the end” Franky declared one morning after he had finished eating……

Then about a week later, just before the sun came up, the authorities burst through the Petrillo's front door and snatched them and threw them into the back of a black SUV and took them far away to a place where there were previously set up stations for the beheadings of those who refused to deny God and His Reality.

“Try not to be too afraid Cecilia……We’ll never know what happened! There won’t be any pain. It happens too fast! This is the most amazing moment because we are about to find ourselves standing before the Throne of GOD,” Franky whispered into his wife’s ear.

Cecilia stood in amazement of her husband’s great strength and conviction and praised the Lord silently.

Then they were forcibly pushed into a long line of poor souls; awaiting their beheadings. As soon as the men walked away, Franky made a bold move…

“Hey,” he said; tapping the shoulder of the guy in front of them in the line.

The man turned around; anguish had taken over his face and his whole demeanor had been altered.

“I’m sorry to bother you…..I just wanted to ask if my wife and I could go ahead of you in line,” he requested, to the man’s great surprise.

“Sure,” he replied, with a snicker and a roll of his eyes, as though Frank were the one who was truly crazy.

“Back me up,” he whispered into Cecilia’s awaiting ear.

“So you think I’m nuts huh?” He asked the man.

“YUP!”

“Well what if I explained it, would you be interested in hearing the reason why?”

“Well……I guess……. I ain’t got anything else to do while I await my impending death,” the man replied; suddenly sounding kind and humble.

“Well this is my wife Cecilia…….God has been with us throughout these past seven years. He has shown us a great deal as to what has been happening. I admit we were not believers before the Rapture, otherwise we would have been taken with those who were wise enough to believe before time ran out, but now we DO…….And, we would like to share our faith with you.” He said; nodding to Cecilia. Please consider that God had all of this planned to rescue His people from evil….Well He already did, but another rescue for those who’ve been left behind, is coming too.”

“Oh yeah? When is that supposed to happen?”

“Well, there will be another Rapture for the Jews as soon as the tribulation ends, but even right now a rescue is near, for us who believe….Because, as soon as we die, we will see Him BUT only if we are saved. For those who are not, first they perish and then at the time of the White Throne Judgment, they will see Him, but only to be banished to hell forever……God doesn’t want you to be a part of that group.”

“Yes, it’s all true,” Cecilia added. “You should have seen us just before the authorities stormed our house; God was feeding us from the ceiling because we ran out of food.”

“WOW!” the man replied, trying not to shout too loud. He quickly looked around and then fell to his knees. “Is this the way to come to Him?” He inquired.

“YES!” Replied the Petrillos as they fell to his side and prayed with him.

Shortly after, a patroller came by and realized what they were doing. He merely shook his head and walked away.

“I’m real scared,” Franky remarked softly to his companions sarcastically. “They’re killing us anyway….so…..Isn’t it remarkable how God protected us for so long and the authorities came right when we were growing weary waiting for our redemption?”

Cecilia nodded and the man was left speechless.

THEN, Frank, Cecilia and the man found themselves standing before the Throne of GOD; staring in great AWE and stupendous JOY.

Then Jesus put crowns on their heads, and they threw their crowns to HIS FEET.

And they ALL lived happily ever after in paradise!
