Choices.
by Olawale Ogunsola
6/19/2023 / Relationships
In life generally, there are so many things available. Therefore, this calls for a careful examination of available things to know what is right and of value. Doing so will end up in making a choice. So a choice has to be made wisely.
Making a choice is not restricted to a segment of the society, all segments are involved. It is not limited to a section of people, all are engaged in it regularly.
Your choices determine a lot of things that affect your life directly here on Earth and in eternal life.
Friends.
The Lord Who created mankind eschewed loneliness, therefore, we need each other. Friendship is an important area of life where choices have to be made. This has to be done wisely. The reason is that the friend that you chose has some great influence on your life, what will happen to you and what you will become in life.
When you choose a friend, he will either add to you or subtract from you, what is good or bad. Directly you will reap the gains if he adds what is good or bears the consequences if he adds what is evil. The same goes for if he subtracts evil from you or adds it.
So you have to choose the right friends.
In-laws.
There is this African proverb that says, "If you go to the forest to choose a bride, you will have ghosts as in-laws."
Marriage is a vital part of life as designed by the Creator. He made humanity male and female be of help to each other in many ways. Therefore, there is a mandatory need for leaving and cleaving. The man will leave his parents (Genesis 2:24)and the woman will do likewise (. Psalms 45:10) to cleave together to form a new family.
Do you know that the new home will be directly or indirectly affected by their family background and parental influences? That is why the choice of in-laws must be made carefully and prayerfully. If not, like any other wrong choices, the new family will bear the consequences.
Nothing is new under Heaven. People have lived for this generation to learn from them. The words about a King in Jerusalem will be a good lesson for all:
[5]"Jehoram was thirty-two years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem for eight years.
[6]But Jehoram followed the example of the kings of Israel and was as wicked as King Ahab, for he had married one of Ahab’s daughters. So Jehoram did what was evil in the lord’s sight." 2 Chronicles 21.
Those words reveal that King Ahab of Israel and his family were evildoers. What do you expect their contribution to their son-in-law's life to be?
Evil and wickedness!
Jezebel was King Ahab's wife. She encouraged and fully supported her husband to do evil in the eyes of God and man. Should her daughter perform less? After all, it is a common saying that "As is mother, so is her daughter." Directly and indirectly, King Ahab and Queen Jezebel influenced their son-in-law, King Jehoram to do wickedly to destroy his relationship with the God of Israel.
My beloved reader, make a right and wise choice when it comes to the matter of in-laws so that you will not regret it. If you have made a choice already, watch the counsel of your in-laws. Does it draw you closer to God or away from Him? This is a very good pointer to knowing the type of family you are joined with. Where they are evil, seek the Lord for help. He will aid you. Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord.
