The Truth
By Jerry D. Ousley
I would like to address our current generation many of whom claim to be open to all ways of thinking except for God, the Bible and Christian belief. I have communicated with some of you, particularly on Facebook, and you have challenged me as being close-minded, being a bigot and even racist because I support the view of the Bible. You have accused me as being a hater because I choose to stand on the teachings and truths of the Word of God. You challenge that the Bible was just written by men and question whether it is true or not. I know that when it comes right down to it, there is an acceptance by faith that must take place.
You want to say that in order to love someone you must accept them for who they are, what they are, or what they choose to be. That is falsehood and a lie. A man who has abused children, women and has committed murder has chosen his belief. By your definition, if I love him then I must accept and agree with what he has done and who he is. But the truth is, as a Christian I am to love him, but not agree with, nor accept as normal what he has done. You see the ridiculousness of this line of thinking?
I agree that everyone has a right to believe what they want to believe. They have rights as citizens of the United States of America. They should not be denied these rights because of what they have chosen to become. But that does not make them okay and right in their beliefs. Just because a bully is bigger and tougher than you and can beat you up doesn’t make him right. It may make him stronger, but that does not change the truth. The same rule applies here.
I want to establish some truths and wonder how many of you have the guts to read on and be challenged by what I have to say especially with an open mind. Yes, it does, in the end, require acceptance by faith, but there is enough evidence to say that it is true, in fact more evidence than what most so-called modern thinkers have who challenge the Bible.
First, the Bible was penned by men, that is true, but men who claim that they were merely writing down what God had inspired for them to write. In fact, if the Bible is true, the original 10 Commandments were actually written by the hand of God on tables of stone. Now I realize that we must be careful here, because men are known to lie, stretch the truth, and make claims, which they may truly believe but are in fact originated from their imaginations. But consider this: The Bible was penned by at least 35 different authors over a period of at least 1500 years and for the most part they all agree and complement each other. I challenge you to produce another work in which that many people and over that vast of a time stretch, agree. That, in itself, is a miracle.
But further proof lies in what experts in ancient literature use to decide the authenticity of a literary work. That rule is - How many ancient manuscripts exist of this work. The more that exist, the more probable that it is authentic. By far the Bible exceeds every ancient writing known to man. Just to name a few, Plato has 7; Aristotle has 49; and Homer’s Iliad has 643. But the Old Testament of the Bible has more than 2000 and the New Testament of the Bible has more than 25,000. Yet no one questions the truth of Plato, Aristotle or Homer even though their ancient copies pale in significance to that of the Bible (yes, I am aware that the Iliad is fiction. I use it to prove the point of authenticity). That establishes, to me, that people choose to ignore the truth for what they want to believe.
Next, except for a few minor incidents, the Bible does not, contrary to popular belief, contradict itself. And those few minor incidents can be justified and explained with a little research.
Some will bring up that there are two basic manuscripts, the older of which leaves out some of the stories and teachings of the Bible, and they are basically right about that. We could go into a Theological discussion on this subject but rather than argue about it let’s just settle it by saying that even with those exceptions, the differences do not harm the overall message of the good news of salvation. Both manuscripts completely agree as to this.
What about scientific evidence? On this subject I will issue a challenge. I challenge anyone to give me one scientific fact - not theory (because theory is belief that has not been proven) - but actual proven fact that goes against the Bible. Every factual discovery that has ever come to light has already been taught in the Bible, and that before men accepted it as fact. Today we have all kinds of theories being taught and accepted that have never, nor ever will be, proven. Men even come up with theories based on other theories to which so many buy into even though they can’t scientifically prove a single one.
Okay, some might accept parts of the Bible as true but then deny others, and especially the miraculous. Let me ask you, do you take a history book that has many factual proofs in it and deny the rest? I think not. Most know that if the bulk of it is true then most likely all of it is true. Yet they can’t accept the Bible in the same way. If you believe that God did create everything, then after having the ability to speak worlds, suns, galaxies and the universe into existence with such accuracy, balance and precision, then why is it so hard to believe that God in the Flesh (Jesus Christ) could walk on water? Why is it so hard to believe that He could make a special fish that could swallow a man and keep him alive for 3 days? If God is powerful enough to create everything, why can’t He do whatever He chooses to do?
Now, if after all this proof, you still believe that God made mistakes in people and their genders then how narrow-minded you must be. If the Bible is true then God made male and female without mistake. Only by flaws in our own thinking can we twist that around. Identifying with something that you are not does not make it so. You are what God made you to be, either male or female and to even think that you can identify as an animal like a dog or cat is honestly either insanity or stupidity. Sorry but facts are facts.
The truth is that regardless what you choose to believe, even though you have a right to believe whatever you want, does not make you right by proof or scientific fact.
I do not write this in hate, bigotry or prejudice, but only because it is my desire, but more importantly God’s desire, for you to know the truth. Jesus said that the truth would set us free (John 8:32). I am no better than anyone else on this planet. We are all in the same predicament. We all need a Savior and that Savior is Jesus Christ. He came because God loves us - Truly loves us and doesn’t want you or me to perish in sin. We all have the same chance and the same hope, but only if we accept that hope and that chance in Jesus.
Can a homosexual, lesbian, transgender or whatever, be saved? Listen, sin is sin. Whether it is a sin I may be guilty of, a sexual sin, a lie, a murder, or whatever. If I tell a lie I am just as guilty of sin as any sinner. In fact, Paul wrote that all have sinned and come short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23). Any sin can be forgiven. Yes indeed, a homosexual, lesbian, transgender, murderer, liar, or thief can be saved. But just as Jesus forgave the woman who had been caught in adultery (see John 8:11) He also added, “Go and sin no more.” That means that we are supposed to begin conquering our sin after salvation. Will we mess up? Probably. Most likely we will sin again. But we don’t just accept it as normal and keep on sinning. We pick ourselves up after our fall, dust off our butts and keep going. We can conquer sin.
So, there it is. You can ridicule me, hate me, write offensive untrue things about me. You can spill your filth, but it does not make it true. There is only one truth. Jesus said that He is the way, the truth and the life (John 14:6). Now it’s up to you.
