THE LAW OF LIBERTY: Freedom Study Part 1

by linzy bruno

NOTE: 3 versions are used for greater ease of understanding.

“It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.” (Galatians 5:1, niv)

The law enslaves us, but freedom in Christ liberates believers from the bondage of the law. As for God’s Law; referring to the 10 Commandments, Paul declares:

“Let no debt remain outstanding except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” (Romans 13:8, niv)

And Jesus said:

“And you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” (John 8:32, nkjv)

And God has written His Law on the hearts of His people, therefore, we who love Him do not need to look into the law of commands, but within:

“For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, saith the Lord; I will put my laws into their mind, and write them in their hearts: and I will be to them a God, and they shall be to me a people:” (Hebrews 8:10, kjv)

That’s because when Jesus came in the flesh, He came to fulfill the Law, which freed believers from the Law:

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” (Matthew 5:17, niv)

And Paul declares freedom in Christ, as well:

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2Corinthians 3:17)

The Law of Christ is mentioned in several verses in the Bible. Here are some of them:

  • 1Corinthians 9:21: "to those who are without law, as without law, though not being without the law of God but under the law of Christ, so that I might win those who are without law."
  • Galatians 6:2: "Bear one another’s burdens, and thereby fulfill the law of Christ."
  • James 2:12: "So speak and so act as those who are to be judged by the law of liberty."
  • Romans 8:1-3: "Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For in Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set you free from the law of sin and death. For what the law was powerless to do in that it was weakened by the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful man, as an offering for sin."
  • Romans 10:4: "For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believes."

Moreover, James, the brother of Jesus has a few words of wisdom for believers regarding liberty:

“But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does.” (James 1:25. nkjv)

Also See: James 2:8-12

The Apostle Paul presents a warning regarding liberty:

“For you, brethren, have been called to liberty; only do not use liberty as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another.” (Galatians 5:13, nkjv)

This understanding is crucial, as we see through Paul’s words that our heart condition and motives are key and of monumental importance to properly abide in freedom.

Furthermore, in Hebrews we read:

“Since the children have flesh and blood, He too shared in their humanity so that by His death He might break the power of him who holds the power of death---that is, the devil—and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death.” (Hebrews 2:14-15, niv)

Our natural human propensity to fear death is appropriately addressed in this context. To live by the law keeps us working in the flesh; striving in vain to keep the whole of the law, which no man can accomplish. Thereby, when we embrace His Freedom, we are then also enabled by His Spirit to abandon our natural fear of man and death, which go hand in hand, and abide in freedom and liberty and go onto perfection, which is spiritual growth; being changed progressively into the image of Christ, which enables our love and charity toward others to grow:

“Owe no one anything except to love one another, for he who love another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, “You shall not commit adultery,” “You shall not murder,” “You shall not steal,” “You shall not bear false witness,” “You shall not covet,” and if there is any other commandment, are all summed up in this saying, namely, “You shall love your neighbor as yourself,” Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.” (Romans 13:8-10, nkjv)

“Let no debt remain outstanding except the continuing debt to love one another, for whoever loves others has fulfilled the law.” (Romans 13:8, niv)
