Your Citizenship

Many factors can cause a man to depart from his own country. Such a departure is meant to be for a season or time. The person on a journey is expected to return home one day.

This is because a home country cannot be compared with a host one, no matter the extent of the comfort or comfortability. A home is a home, anytime.

This was the case with Hadad. He fled from the face of King Solomon and the captain of his host, Joab. After the demise of the two, he became homesick. He desired to return to his country, irrespective of his comfort and pleasure at his disposal.

The conversation between Hadad and King Pharaoh runs thus,
"[21] Hadad said to Pharaoh, “Let me depart, that I may go to my own country.”
[22]Then Pharaoh said to him, “But what have you lacked with me, that suddenly you seek to go to your own country?” So he answered, “Nothing, but do let me go anyway.” 2 Kings 11:21-22.

Do you know that Hadad chose to forsake every pleasure in a strange land to return to his home country? He was not bothered with whatever awaited him, good, bad, or ugly. He was prepared to bear the brunt.

In other words, he held loosely to the things that were available to him in the land of Egypt. He lacked nothing but he did not allow this to go into his heart or head. He remembered that no matter what pleasure the foreign might be or bring, he was not a citizen of Egypt. He knew very well that it was not about his comfort only but his citizenship.

The king of Egypt then made him as comfortable as he could because he lacked nothing there. He was aware of the truth that another king may be enthroned and may not know or recognize or be interested in his welfare (Exodus 1:8). He longed to go home knowing well that he was a stranger in Egypt.

Hadad was a very wise man to think of his country and citizenship. He desired to go back ready to forsake everything at his disposal. He was not bothered about any unforeseen challenges he could face.

Beloved Pilgrim, do you remember that you are not a citizen of this world? Your citizenship is in heaven (Philippians 3:20). No matter your level of comfort or discomfort here, your final place of rest is in Heaven. Are you looking towards the place from where the Lord is coming to take His Saints home? This should be your topmost priority any day and anytime.

Do not honor any appeal from any quarter to get you hooked to the things of this world that are ephemeral. Honor the Lord Who has gone to prepare a better place for you in Heaven and He is coming soon to take you and other prepared Saint home to Himself; to be with Him forever. Be homesick. Prepare to meet the Lord your God Who is coming for you and others. Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord.
