More Than A Religion
by Olawale Ogunsola
8/14/2024 / Salvation
Knowing God, the Creator of Heaven and Earth, through the Lord Jesus Christ and following Him goes beyond observing a few religious activities.
A certain man called Cornelius, in his days, had the following five religious attributes:
"[2]a devout man and one who feared God with all his household, who gave alms generously to the people, and prayed to God always."
With all these religious activities, he had not safely arrived at the right point of a complete and perfect man. He needed more than his religious activities.
As much as he was busy with what he knew to be the best, an Angel appeared to him telling him what he needed to hear and act on for a spiritual revolution that brought about a lasting positive change to take place.
What was it? He was directed to send for a man called Peter who was then _"lodging with Simon, a tanner, whose house is by the sea. He will tell you what you must do.” Acts 10:6(in part).
Something more! A step further!!
He sent for Apostle Peter who wasted no time to answer him. On arrival, he told Cornelius about Jesus Christ, the Lord and Savior of all people. He revealed,
"And He commanded us to preach to the people, and to testify that it is He who was ordained by God to be Judge of the living and the dead." Acts 10:42.
Before that time, as religious as Cornelius and his household were, they did not know Christ, "the Judge of the living and the dead".
However, all the religious duties were in the record in heaven before God and His Angels for a memorial. He needed to do more for those duties to be of the best benefit to him.
As the words of salvation poured out of Peter's mouth, the Holy Spirit came upon them like others who had believed before them.
What followed was the Acts of "dying with Christ and rising with him", which is water baptism.
Apostle Peter declared,
“Can anyone forbid water, that these should not be baptized who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have? ” Acts 10:47.
Throughout his religious days, he did not know Christ or the Holy Spirit. He did not know that there was a need to die with Christ and rise with the Judge of all. He was busy serving God *_in the strength of the flesh_* which could not sustain him and other members of his household. When the Holy Spirit came upon them, they became another person which only religious duties could not do.
If you receive the mercy of God to come across this piece, make sure that you are familiar with and take the steps taken by the influential man, Cornelius. He was a leader of over one hundred soldiers. Be humble before your Maker, accept the Lord Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior of your soul. Be baptized in His name and pray for the Holy Spirit to fall you and every member of your household.
If you have done so, let others be informed that they may become members of the household of God.
Stay blessed and prepared for the imminent coming of the Lord.
