The Helper – Part 1 – How Did She Get Here?

By Jerry D. Ousley

When it comes to women, I am by no means an expert.  Actually, I don’t think there is a man alive who would honestly be capable of saying that he is an expert on women.  Now, ladies, before you get all up in the air, I have the greatest respect for you all.  God made something magnificently wonderful when He came up with the idea of you.  I’ve often said that when God first presented Eve to Adam, the part that isn’t in the Bible is that he took one look at her, his heart started going “thumpity thump,” and he let out a squall – “Woe, Man!”  A week later he saw her coming, tried to hide, and said under his breath, “Oh no, now what?  Woe, man…”  For this reason, she was called woman.  Not really.  Just a little humor there.

This is a very unique, controversial, and touchy subject, so I’m going to take at least three weeks to cover this.  It is just too important.  In today’s world there are so many different teachings, especially from the Church, regarding the ladies, that it requires careful examination of just what the Bible actually says.  Way too many opinions have been formed by misinterpretation and misleading teachings.  With that being said, here we go …

Genesis 2:18-24 says, “And the Lord God said, ‘It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.’ Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the air, and brought them to Adam to see what he would call them. And whatever Adam called each living creature, that was its name. So Adam gave names to all cattle, to the birds of the air, and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper comparable to him.  And the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, and he slept; and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the flesh in its place. Then the rib which the Lord God had taken from man He made into a woman, and He brought her to the man.  And Adam said: ‘This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’  Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.”  This is how the women got here to begin with.  She was taken from man, made from one of his ribs.

She was called “his helper.”  The Hebrew language derives “helper” (or “help meet” in the King James Version) from “azar” which means exactly “helper.”  Not a slave, not a servant, not a sub-species, but one called alongside to help.  She is to respect her husband, but not bow down and kiss his feet (unless that’s something she’d really like to do – but not required).

It is interesting to note that this is the same term Jesus used when telling His disciples that the Holy Spirit was coming.  He called Him “The Helper” (in King James, the Comforter – see John 14:16, 26, John 15:26 and John 16:7).  The Greek word is “parakletos” and the meaning extends from a day-to-day helper, to one who helps legally, pleading our case.  I was blown away when I realized this.  I’m not saying that the woman is equated to the Holy Spirit but their jobs are very similar.  When the husband treats his wife the way the Bible really says, she will, in most cases, respond naturally in the way the Bible says.  Did you get that?  It isn’t upon the ladies to meet certain requirements, like obeying their husbands, being there for their every beaconing demand, but the responsibility actually lies with the husband.  When we, gentlemen, do what we are supposed to do, according to God’s word, then everything falls into place.

Someone once said,” From the side, not from the head to rule over, nor from the feet to be looked down upon and trampled underfoot, but from the side to be equal with, from under the arm to be loved and protected.”  She is a helper, and let me tell you, my wife is exactly that:  A HELPER.  There is so much I couldn’t do without her.  She comes up with some great ideas and suggestions, and when I get over my stubbornness and listen, it is usually pretty good advice, or an excellent idea.  That’s because she is doing what God intended for her to do – BE A HELPER.

Remember guys, not another creature on the face of this planet is her equal.  God caused every type of animal that He had created to pass before Adam.  Note that the first man had incredible mental capabilities to be able to come up with a name and remember them all.  Adam gave names to all the creatures God had made.  That alone is an indication that after the fall, after Adam sinned, our mental capacity digressed instead of progressed. Just a side note, by the way.  The point for this message is that none of those were good enough to be the equal helper.  We have pets today.  We love our pets.  Our dogs and cats have the ability to love us back. We have three cats.  I love all three of them.  They each, in their own way, show affection back to me.  But not one of them could ever take the place of Rose.  She is my friend, my companion, my business partner, and she meets all my needs.

This is a bit easier to do when we are Christians, but even non-Christians would discover how precious, wonderful and in-expendable our wives are when we treat them the way God intended.  If you are having marital problems, 99% of the time, guys, if we will treat our wives, love our wives, and respect our wives as God taught in the Bible, your marital problems would solve themselves.  Come on men, lets man-up and do what we were created to do.  Don’t believe me?  Try it for a while.  I guarantee you will see a difference.  Dare ya …
