Some Healthier Ways to Enjoy Your Holiday Sweets
by Tonja Taylor
12/20/2024 / Health
For this reason, since the day we heard about you, we have not stopped praying for you. We continually ask God to fill you with the knowledge of his will through all the wisdom and understanding that the Spirit gives. - Col. 1:9, NIV
These tips have worked for me and others, and may help you enjoy even the richest foods in a healthier way during the holidays, so you enjoy eating them, and suffer less later!
If you're like me, you allow yourself to eat more sweets and other rich foods from Thanksgiving through Christmas, and on to New Year's Day (and, since my birthday is in January, we've usually continued to celebrate through then!).
That's fun--except paying for it physically afterwards. My husband and I eat very healthily throughout the year; almost all NON-gmo and certified organic foods, so we've learned some tips that we usually do before we eat the rich/gooey/sugar-laded/dairy-loaded food(s), and here they are:
(I am not a doctor, nor a nutritionist, nor a dietician, nor a health expert. However, these tips have repeatedly helped me and my husband and others I know through the years, and I believe they can help many others to better enjoy the special food treats with less suffering!)
(1) Eat protein (meat, or a protein shake, etc.) before the meal, or at least with foods that are high in sugar and/or dairy and/or carbs. The protein will usually help absorb the sugar(s) and be less stressful on your digestion.
(2) Take an antacid, especially before you eat dairy-laden and/or spicy foods.
(3) Get digestive enzymes and/or histamine blockers at your local health food store, and take one or the other--or both, if you have had allergic reactions to foods in the past--at least an hour before you eat, and preferably, a couple days before you have that or those big meal(s).
I eat so healthily (foods and good supplements) that I kept having a challenge with a type of diarrhea that puzzled me. I knew I was not sick, but even a medical doc confirmed to me that too many green shakes" would cause such an imbalance, etc. So, I asked the LORD for wisdom, and He instructed me to get digestive enzymes. Those really work for me, and it's very economical and easy. I take them almost daily, with the other supplements.
The LORD knows all things. He created our bodies, and sustains them every moment, and He knows exactly what we need. Although we don't want to make a habit of overindulging in sweet foods too often, I believe He is pleased when we enjoy ourselves with sweets and rich foods; when we celebrate His goodness, and especially when we remember to give Him thanks!
So I'll end with my fourth point, which actually should be first: (4) Always thank the LORD for the food, and bless it; command it to nourish your body, and declare Exodus 23:25 and I Tim 4:3-5 over it:
