THE SOUND OF SILENCE

by Lupie Riley

Thought:  In my new location I had the experience of living in a world with no distractions.  My TV and computer had not been hooked up yet and I didn’t have a radio to listen too.  I discovered what complete silence sounds like for over two weeks.  There’s only one word I can think of to describe it “Peace”.

It reminded me of that still small voice Elijah heard after all the distractions had subsided.  It was that still, small voice of God.  I Kings 19:11-13  “Go out and stand before me on the mountain,” the Lord told him.  And as Elijah stood there the Lord passed by, and a mighty windstorm hit the mountain; it was such a terrible blast that the rocks were torn loose, but the Lord was not in the wind.  After the wind, there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.  And after the earthquake, there was a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire, and after the fire, there was the sound of a gentle whisper.  When Elijah heard it, he wrapped his face in his scarf and went out and stood at the entrance of the cave.

In this chaotic, uncertain world we live in when we don’t know what a day will bring, the soul longs for just a day of quiet and peace.  Who and what do we put our trust in to find that?  There’s only one person we can draw peace from, it’s the Creator who made us our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  He is the “Peace” giver.  John 14:27 “I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart!  And the peace I give isn’t like the fragile peace the world gives, so don’t be troubled or afraid.”

In the apostle Paul’s words, Rom. 1:17” This Good News tells us that God makes us ready for heaven—makes us right in God’s sight—when we put our faith and trust in Christ to save us.  This is accomplished from start to finish by faith.  As the Scripture says it, “The man who finds life will find it through trusting God.”

There are two things that the world hungers for, Peace and Hope, and we find them both through a personal relationship with Christ.  Rom. 15:13 “So I pray for you Gentiles that God who gives you hope will keep you happy and full of Peace as you believe in him.  I pray that God will help you to overflow with Hope in him through the Holy Spirit’s power within you.”

Prayer:  Father God, quiet me down so I can hear that still small voice of comfort, hope and peace.  Amen

Verse:  II Cor. 5:18,19 “All these new things are from God who has brought us back to himself through what Jesus Christ did.  And God has given us the privilege of urging everyone to come into his favor and be reconciled to him.  For God was in Christ, restoring the world to himself, no longer counting men’s sins against them but blotting them out.  For God himself took the sinless Christ and poured into him our sins.  Then, in exchange, he poured God’s goodness into us!”
