The Stranger

by Maria C Willhelm
11/16/2006 / Short Stories

He found in my dessert parched, starved and empty.
Somehow, he found me in the secluded
darkness and took my hand.
I looked away in shame and tried
to dust of the dirty rags that covered
my tattered heart.
He smiled at me as he peered into mine eyes
and pierced through the walls to my soul.
He didn't flinch at what he saw, he
simply smiled with tender mercy in his eyes.
He walked with me and his words
soothed my frenzied thoughts.
He lead to a crimson pool of water and
so carefully washed away my filth.
He then clothed me with crisp linens
white as the wool of a lamb.
I stood there amazed at his kindness and watched
as he removed his robe and placed it upon me.
Before I could say a word, I looked up at his
graceful face and saw a single tear
trickle down his cheek and yet, he still smiled.
He opened his hands and from each one flowed
a stream of blood like a river.
I suddenly felt my heart sinking within me
as he began to walk away.
I wanted to grab a hold of him and mend his wounds
but, my arms... they couldn't reach.
I stood there and watched him as light
so brilliant enveloped him and like the caring
arms of a mother they carried him into the sky.
A peace swept through the air like a mighty wind
and he was gone.
I looked around and felt the freshness of a new day
and found myself appreciating the sunlight.
My sadness soon replaced with joy.
I had a second chance, what would I do now?
I realized what I must do.
I must speak of Him, the man who gave me new life.
The stranger who thought nothing of who I had been
and simply gave His all.

I am a christian wife, mother, singer, poet, artist and lover of life. Born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico and raised in Miami, Florida. I received the Lord as my Savior at the age of 15 and although I strayed for a while..The Lord kept me and never let me go.
